Any loose plaster should be removed with hand tools only. All plaster that has sound adhesion to the structure should be left on. If the background is saturated check for external cracks, damaged water systems and missing pointing. These problems must be cured before any plastering is undertaken. Any internal gaps or voids should be filled with lime putty pointing mortar, packing joints deeper or wider than 15mm with packing material. (see pointing motar notes)</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><u>Suction control</u></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">The day before plastering is to be undertaken the surfaces should be sprayed with clean water, the amount of water depends on the prosity of the stone e.g. sandstone & brick require more than flint stone. If necessary several sprayings may be needed, with the last damping just before application of plaster.</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><u>Pre-mixed</u></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">All lime mortars and plasters benefit from being pre-mixed for a minimum of a couple of weeks and then "knock-up" again prior to use to plasticize them - this reduces shrinkage in the plaster.</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><u>Dub - out</u></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">On stone surfaces you will have to prepare the surfaces for plastering. If you place a straight edge vertically on the wall, you will need to fill the gap between the straight edge and the wall. This is done by using a gauging trowel and haired lime plaster, only 10 - 12mm must be applied at any one time, so 2 - 3 coats may be needed. These coats should be scratched to bring out the hair, this allows bond with the next coat.</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><u>Base coat(s)</u></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">This coat(s) must be applied no sooner than 3 days after the Dub coat. Normally coat thickness is around 12mm; it must not be applied over 15mm thick. Once the coat has slightly hardened, the coat should then be rubbed with a dry bag to bring hair to the surface, this gives the next coat a good keying surface, then it should be scratched with a scratch comb in a diamond pattern.</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><u>Float Coat</u></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">This is a matured unhaired mix of one part lime putty to one part fine silica sand. again once the surface has slightly hardened, using a damp sponge lightly go over the plaster. This provides a good key for the lime-wash, and also helps with carbonation.</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><u>Plastering on Wooden Laths</u></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">Laths should be dampened before plastering starts.  Apply a first scratch coat of 3/1 haired lime mortar through the lath, leaving around 8mm on top of the lath. Do not over trowel this coat, use a dry paper bag rubbed lightly over the surface, this brings hair to the surface giving a good key for the next coat. then lightly scratch the coat with a scratch comb.  Apply float coat of 3/1 lime finishing plaster, if any shrinkage cracks appear, lightly spray the plaster with water and trowel or sponge in the cracks.</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><u>Coverage Rates</u></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2"><u>Base Coat</u></font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">1 Ton covers 50sqm @ 10mm</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">30kg covers 1.5 sqm @ 10mm</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><u><font size="2">Finish Coat</font></u></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">30kg covers 6sqm at 5mm</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">30kg covers 10sqm at 3mm</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">Please note: Base coat plaster is supplied with hair & will require hairing.</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">If you have any questions or need any technical assistance please do not hesitate to call or email</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2">01282 431155</font></p><p style="font-family: georgia, times new roman, times, serif; text-align: center;"><font size="2"><a href="mailto:info@heritage-supplies.com">info@heritage-supplies.com</a></font></p><p align="left"><font size="2" face="Verdana"></font></p><p align="left"><img hspace="0" border="0" align="baseline" src="http://www.heritage-supplies.com/images/made%20in%20the%20uk.jpg" alt="Thsi product is made in the UK" /></p>
